Vulnerabilities and security updates go hand in hand, however the latter can occasionally be delayed, giving hackers and cybercriminals a window of opportunity to practise their nefarious activities. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning about a seizure vulnerability in iPhones, iPads, and Macs, recommending users to act quickly or face the consequences.

After uncovering a memory corruption vulnerability that affects iPhones, iPads, and even Macs, CERT-In issued a "high" severity alert. These Apple iDevices have active vulnerabilities that are "currently being exploited" by hostile actors until they are upgraded to the latest version.

What is the danger and who is affected?

The vulnerability exists in the IOMobileFrameBuffer of iOS and iPadOS, according to an official statement from CERT-In, and it might allow hackers to remotely modify the memory with kernel permissions. The flaw allows attackers to run arbitrary code and gain elevated privileges on the targeted system, prompting the severity level to be raised to "high."

So, what are your options?

Given the severity of the flaw and the fact that it is currently being exploited in the wild, it is critical that all vulnerable devices receive a software update. Apple has already released a patch to address the issue, which should safeguard all devices.

Users on iPhones and iPads can update their software by going to Settings > General > Software Update. iPhone users will receive the iOS 14.7.1 upgrade, while iPad and Mac users will receive the iPadOS 14.7.1 and Big Sur 11.5.1 updates. As soon as the devices are connected to Wi-Fi, press the install button and wait for the software update to complete. It could take several minutes, depending on the speed of your Wi-Fi.
