The $379 RX 6600 XT is AMD's new entry-level RX 6000-series GPU built on the same RDNA 2 architecture as its beefier cousins but at a more affordable price point. For clients who don't want a next-gen 4K gaming setup, the new card guarantees the "ultimate 1080p gaming experience."
With a suggested retail price of $379 (AMD isn't selling its own version), AMD's RX 6600 XT is even less expensive than the $479 RX 6700 XT it debuted earlier this year, which was designed for 1440p gaming.
The RX 6600 XT has 32 compute units, 8GB of GDDR6 RAM, a base frequency of 2359 MHz, a boosted clock of 2589 MHz and consumes 160W of power. To put that in perspective, the top-of-the-line RX 6900 XT has 80 compute units, while the RX 6700 XT has 40.

However, AMD's rationale is that most gamers don't have the necessary hardware for a full 4K gaming rig, which necessitates not only the latest and greatest in GPUs but also a processor and a display capable of displaying enough pixels. According to IDC research, about two-thirds of gaming displays sold last year were 1080p panels, while growth in high-refresh-rate displays was 20 times faster than growth in lower-refresh rate models.

The RX 6600 XT is designed to fit in with these trends, promising to run AAA games like Battlefield 5 or Cyberpunk 2077 at high frame rates and in full 1080p resolution. The new card isn't for those looking for the most up-to-date GPU; rather, it's for those who have an older GPU, such as the GTX 1060 (which still accounts for over 10% of all graphics cards in Steam's hardware survey and can struggle with more recent titles).

For games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Doom Eternal, the new RX 6600 XT provides a significant performance boost over AMD's 5000-series cards, with 1.4x or more FPS gains compared to the RX 5600 XT and RX 5700. AMD also claims that the new card trumps Nvidia's equally low-cost RTX 3060 GPU, which starts at $329 (at least in theory).
“We're doing our best to get supplies, but the demand is unprecedented, and the supply limits are real, so we're working with those issues at hand,” AMD said at a news conference. However, given the current difficulties in obtaining new GPUs, it may be prudent to prepare for another round of hard-to-find cards.
AMD's normal lineup of partners, including ASRock, Asus, Biostar, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire, XFX, and Yeston, will begin selling the RX 6600 XT on August 11th, with prebuilt systems expected to arrive in August as well.
